What makes a marriage? Marriage is of God. Honor the Creator by following his directions.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness... (2 Timothy 3:16)
The essence of marriage is a public vow; a promise before God and others of your commitment to each other.
What is the purpose of marriage?
The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman’, for she was taken out of man." (Genesis 2:23)
God knew it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18) so he created woman. The purpose of marriage is deep companionship. Absolutely vulnerable to each other but always accepted.
“love you --- I am you”
God’s order: leave our parents, unite with our spouse (through the vows), and have oneness
"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." (Matthew 19:4-6)
The priority of marriage is ITSELF.
Our primary relationship is with God.
Our primary human relationship is with our spouse.
Marriage has power. If our marriage is strong, then we move in the world with strength, even if everything else is weak. But if our marriage is weak, the opposite is true.
